San Francisco, Calif. — The San Franciso Giants recently acquired pitcher Mitch White from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations. White, 29, is a Bay Area native and attended Bellarmine College Preparatory (Class of 2013) and Santa Clara University.
Mitch White grew up in San Jose, California, and was a huge San Francisco Giants fan. White attended all of the Giants’ World Series runs growing up and his favorite player was Matt Cain. White is half-Korean and half-white, and his aunt is JuJu Chang of ABC News.
After pitching to a 3.72 ERA at Santa Clara, Mitch White was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2nd round (65th overall) in the 2016 MLB Draft. White pitched his way through the minor leagues before making his first major league appearance in 2020, where he pitched three innings. Since 2020, White has been up and down in the Dodgers system, making appearances in the Single-A, Triple-A, and the MLB, and was later traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2022.
White struggled mightily in Toronto and pitched to a drastic 7.26 ERA in 62 and ⅔ innings pitched. While with the Blue Jays, his strikeout rate significantly decreased and his walk rate increased.
A dream come true for the Bay Area native, White comes to the San Francisco Giants to provide them with a solid bullpen arm. White figures to provide the Giants with significant bullpen help in place of Jakob Junis and Keaton Winn, whom they relied on heavily last year. White is a bulk-inning relief pitcher and should be able to eat up a lot of innings for the Giants this season.
After completing the trade with the Blue Jays, the Giants placed right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb on the 60-day injured list to clear a spot for White on the 40-man roster.
