Travis Scott’s UTOPÍA – Album Review

by Neil Alappatt ’26

Surpassing 1800 days since the debut of ASTROWORLD, the album was initially ignited by collaborations with rockstars, brimming with captivating vigor, and continually fueled by viral memes, Fortnite, and ultimately marred by the tragic negligence incident at the Astroworld Festival. Despite his immense popularity, a significant portion of his reputation hinges on the anticipation surrounding “Utopia,” as he treads the fine line between staying culturally relevant and embracing a nostalgic undertone – reminiscent of artists like Don Toliver. The latter faced a backlash from the public due to an album that received little fanfare, coupled with extensive repetitiveness that led to the waning of his once-refreshing sound. This album represents a certain vulnerability for Travis – shown in key aspects of each song.

At times, the prominent and polished production conceals the reality that Travis falls short in emotional expression on the microphone. The synthesized variations, reminiscent of the haziness found in Blonde by Frank Ocean, present a pleasing auditory experience on the track “My Eyes.” This is particularly enhanced by the dreamy melodies contributed by Sampha and Justin Vernon. Personally, “My Eyes” is a favorite on the album.

While the well-worn rage beat on “Fe!n” lacks certain originality, Playboi Carti introduces a fresh vocal technique (resembling bronchitis) that captures attention, allowing Travis to engage in some ad-libbing. Future’s presence is commanding over the cinematic backdrop of “Telekinesis.” SZA also makes her presence felt, delivering a strong performance that seems more like a professional obligation. However, it’s worth noting that during his prime, Kanye could extract show-stopping performances from collaborations – similar to Travis’ thrills.

Within an album that harmonizes a diverse array of artists, “Lost Forever” emerges as a prominent gem in Utopia’s compilation of tracks. This unexpected trio of Travis Scott, James Blake, and Westside Gunn collaborates synergistically to yield a notable outcome. While James Blake imparts a soulful dimension to the instrumental backdrop, it is Westside Gunn’s contribution that instantaneously commands attention. “Lost Forever” materializes as a composition of unpredictability, a feat uniquely within Travis Scott’s purview. It serves as a testament to Utopia’s audacious and venturesome approach to the hip-hop landscape, harmonizing an array of influences to curate an unparalleled auditory expedition.

Unquestionably the centerpiece of discourse within the album, “Meltdown” marks yet another impactful collaboration between Travis Scott and Drake, consistently a standout moment. Drawing inspiration from their renowned collaboration “Sicko Mode,” “Meltdown” embarks on a journey of dynamic beat transitions, captivating the listener. The synergy they’ve cultivated over time is further fortified in this track. Drake’s delivery takes on an edgier demeanor, his verses imbued with a subdued intensity. Noteworthy among the song’s lyrics are Drake’s subtle allusions to Pusha T and Pharrell, rekindling a feud that dates back half a decade. “Meltdown” firmly upholds the lineage of Travis and Drake’s collaborative anthems, joining the ranks of songs like “Sicko Mode,” “Company,” “Portland,” and “Fair Trade.”

In conclusion, “Utopia” stands as a testament to Travis Scott’s artistic evolution and his ability to transcend conventional boundaries within the realm of hip-hop. Through a masterful blend of diverse influences, innovative production, and seamless collaborations, the album creates a sonic journey that resonates with both his dedicated fanbase and newcomers alike. With its bold experimentation and thought-provoking lyricism, “Utopia” not only cements Travis Scott’s place in the contemporary music landscape but also paves the way for new horizons within the genre.
