The lights shined brightly on the gym floor as the Bellarmine Bells faced off against the Serra Padres. Tension was high from the previous match-up between the two that was decided by a fade-away jumper from Angelo Athens ‘17 in the final seconds of regulation that saved the Bells’ perfect record in WCAL with a 37-34 win.
The Bells started off hot with three pointers from both Athens and Jake Wojcik ’18. Despite their quick start, the Padres fought back and kept the game close up to the half. As the second quarter started the Bells began to pull away and ultimately finished with a 14-point lead and a 60-46 win.
As the Bells battled the Padres, another game was underway in San Francisco. The Archbishop Mitty Monarchs pulled out a win against the 2nd place St. Ignatius Wildcats. This was the Wildcats’ second loss, opening the door for Bellarmine to clinch their first WCAL title in 16 years. With a 12-0 league record, the Bellarmine Bells go into Wednesday night’s matchup against the Valley Christian Warriors (4-8) hoping to secure the WCAL title. The last time the two teams met, the Bells won by a score of 79-65. Even with their 4-8 record, Valley Christian is not a team to underestimate as they are 12-10 overall and are coming in with momentum from their 59-55 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral on Saturday.
